The fiction of American author David Goodis was often more revered outside of the United States, and French director Pierre Chenal’s Argentinian adaptation of Goodis’ novel Missing Persons is a prime example of this. Section des disparus (US: Missing Persons Section) stars Maurice Ronet as Juan Milford, a young and handsome ex-con now married to (and kept by) the wealthy Mendy (Inda Ledesma), whose tyrannical hold on Juan, fortified by her knowledge of his criminal past, leads Juan to fake his own death in order to be with his lover Diana Lander (Nicole Maurey). Thus begins a plot chock full of revelations and switchbacks involving all three members of the love triangle in various combinations. Despite some uneven pacing and a somewhat unwieldy plot, the film is entertaining throughout with much credit going to the grotesqueness of Ledesma’s performance; a scene when the bloody-headed Mendy, having just been pistol whipped, answers the door as a macabre witch-like figure is fantastically perverse.
