For the first hour of “His Kind of Woman” we are just as lost as Dan Milner (Robert Mitchum), trying to figure what’s going on. As we meet all the strange characters in Morro’s resort, it almost feels like a whodunit film… But it’s more like who is gonna do it.
The magnificent claustrophobic noir interiors filmed by Harry J. Wild are eye candy.
This is a strange mashup of sadistic violence and screwball comedy that surprisingly ends up working thanks to the chemistry between Jane Russell and Mitchum, as well as the serious parody of Hollywood performed by Vincent Price. And of course, continuous smart-ass dialogue. My favorite line (with name of the victim removed to avoid spoilers):
Russell: They tell me you killed X, how did it feel?
Mitchum: He didn’t say.
