Fans of the Viennese backdrops and postwar malaise of The Third Man will appreciate this authentic German tale of stolen identity amidst the bombed-out ruins. Featuring moonlit streets and cobblestone alleys, Emil Reinert’s Adventures in Vienna (Abenteuer in Wien) stars Gustav Frölich as Toni Sponer, an impoverished taxi driver and war refugee who seizes the opportunity for a new identity when an American citizen is fatally shot in his back seat. After stealing the corpse’s identification  papers and hiding the body, he plans his escape to the United States until the murderer’s motive shows up in the form of Karin (Cornell Borchers), the discontented wife of famed pianist Claude Manelli (Francis Lederer) who had shot the passenger for trying to steal her. Reinert skillfully establishes an atmosphere of postwar restlessness  (“Every time he looks out the window, he wonders ‘how can I get a different view’?”), the police hunting Toni and Karin with the stealth of Nazi soldiers, while creating plenty of suspense around corners, under bridges, and down blackened hallways. An English language version, Stolen Identity, was released with an altered cast the following year.
