Given its often stunning, low-key lighting and finely developed noir themes, it’s a shame Cette nuit là... (US: That Night) is the only feature film directed by Maurice Cazeneuve. Centering on the otherworldly beauty of Paris fashion model Sylvie Mallet, played by Mylene Demongeot, who at certain angles looks just like the original Mattel Barbie doll (this is not an exaggeration). Sylvie models for a magazine where her husband Jean (Maurice Ronet) serves as art director, and both of them work for publisher Andre Reverdy (Jean Servais), who barely attempts to conceal his desire for Sylvie. While Sylvie is pleased to capitalize on Reverdy’s lust if it will advance her and her husband’s careers, Jean’s jealousy intensifies to the point of no return when he drives frantically to Reverdy’s home in Montmarte (a beautifully edited and scored sequence) to eliminate the source of his rage. Visually, the film maximizes shadows and depth to create distinctive interiors like Reverdy’s cold apartment, cavernous and sepulchral, or the bar where Reverdy ruminates beneath a kaleidoscope of crystal glasses and mirrors.

André Reverdy (Jean Servais) is accustomed to getting anything he wants.
Sylvie Mallet symbolizes feminine beauty to an almost absurd degree.
