Like in all of Daniel Tinayre’s noirs, the sun rarely shines in Pasaporte a Río (US: Passport to Rio), a bitter love triangle story bathed in noir aesthetics; characters hide behind doors, traverse rooftops, walk the streets, stalk labyrinthine dockyards, and meet up in underground dressing rooms, always in a battle between darkness and light. (Darkness wins every time.) After a successful heist of an insurance company, Ramon Machando (Arturo de Córdova) is witnessed killing a man by dancer Nina Reyes (Mirtha Legrand, who was married to Tinayre for nearly 50 years until his death in 1994). That night, he follows Nina home from the club and persuades her to help him transport the insurance loot to Rio de Janeiro. Ramon by now has fallen in love with her, but onboard the ship Nina falls for a doctor (Francisco de Paula), which will cause conflict, to say the least. Meanwhile, Police Inspector Olaver (Eduardo Cuitiño) has been closing in, leading to an extravagant waterside confrontation that produces at least one corpse.
