Featuring an intricate plot focused on various types of fraud, Sidney Gilliat’s Fortune Is A Woman (US: She Played With Fire) stars Jack Hawkins as an insurance investigator whose objectivity may be compromised by an old flame. Oliver Branwell (Hawkins) is assigned to investigate the claim of a damaged painting by Tracey Moreton (Dennis Price) whose wife Sarah (Arlene Dahl) was once in love with Oliver, who agrees to make good on the claim. When an exact copy of the painting shows up in another household months later, Oliver begins to suspect insurance fraud and reluctantly homes in on the flirtatious Sarah as the perpetrator. The screenplay is fast paced if perhaps slightly complicated, and the visuals are at times beautiful, particularly the sequences shot in Louis Manor, the abandoned mansion set ablaze by a murderer.
