Denys de La Patelliere’s
Retour de Manivelle (US:
There’s Always a Price Tag) is a strange yet fascinating mash-up of
Double Indemnity (1944) and
Les Diaboliques (1955), in which French superstar Michèle Morgan plays Helène Fréminger, wife of the frail, suicidal millionaire Eric Fréminger (Peter Van Eyck), who uses Helène and his recently hired chauffer Robert Marbillion (Daniel Gelin) to portray his suicide as murder so the life insurance policy will pay out. After Freminger pulls the trigger, Helene seduces Robert and hires a maid named Jeanne (Michèle Mercier) to prime as a fake witness, but a police investigation turns the household into a maze of deceit, fraud, and suspicion. Cinematographer Pierre Montazel creates some beautiful nocturnal compositions and a semi-Gothic atmosphere enhanced by a steady symphony of rhythmic sound effects, which include crickets, kitchen appliances, and, of course, a plenitude of ticking clocks.
