Contrary to expectations, don’t these films take a noir twist at times?

Great question, Kevin. They have the noir aesthetic for sure (fantastic films!), especially Great Expectations, but their stories/tones are just a little bit off the noir path IMO. Maybe we can add a Noir-Adjacent category of films one of these days.

There are pieces of culture that give the noir vibes and of course many of them fall outside the parameters of noir films. The stories of Poe and tales of urban flaneurs give similar vibes. In reading poetry, I got noir vibes off The Hound of Heaven by Francis Thompson and from some of the poems of Weldon Kees. In a strange way, I think the film of Jack Ruby shooting Lee Harvey Oswald keeps a kind of noir imagery in the head.
