How did your selection process work for choosing Canon, Tier-1, etc?

Was it just one person’s choice or did you have a massive consensus of thousands? 🙂

I also noticed that Canon films aren’t necessarily Tier-1 films as well. Interesting! Why?

The tiers are based on a poll of 10,000 film critics and scholars from around the world! Just kidding LOL I tried as hard as I could to be objective with the tiers (in many cases, I had to hold my nose while placing a film I consider overrated in a higher tier than I thought it deserved). There are some tier-one films that are not part of the Canon because while they are masterpieces, they aren’t necessarily universally considered noir or well-known enough to be considered canon. The Canon films are, in my view, the ones most likely to come up if you asked a noir fan to name the greatest noirs ever made or the best examples of the style. Ultimately, once there’s a critical mass of star ratings, I’ll redo the tiers based on rating consensus, but that will require users to submit way more ratings! : )
